BLAH BLAH BLAH
Let’s talk about what my life consists of right now. Watching reruns of Skins and getting upset at the fact that MTV has garnered rights to the American version.
Skins is a BAFTA winning series produced in the UK about a group of teenagers living in Bristol, SW England. The plotlines are controversial, involving excessive drug use, underage sex, parent student relationships, eating disorders, absent families, abuse and death.
Amateur actors are what make up the show. Actually, it was Skins that launched Dev Patel’s career. You know him as the lovable main character Jamal in Slumdog Millionaire.
So how could the adaptation of this hugely popular show in the UK for the US audience have it’s downfall? Here’s some ideas.
- The UK version is intense. Nude teenagers, graphic death scenes, violent fights, excessive teenage partying. A lot would have to be cut out from the show.
- The casting for the US version is unoriginal. When looking at the casting calls, many of the names aren’t even changed. Furthermore, the character descriptions are taken almost verbatim from the UK first generation cast. Way to create something new and exciting.
- MTV is taking it over. This can guarantee fluffy plot lines, one dimensional characters and no creativity. Actually, I highly doubt it’ll be much different from The Hills or Laguna Beach. Highly scripted “reality”.
- If it is already brilliant, you can’t make it better. Duh.
So after that long rant, everybody get prepared for the weekend of April 13th. It’s my birthday and I’m throwing a Skins party. Let the debauchery begin.
